global design

The seminar ‘Design and/as Translation: Globalising Design Histories?' will focus on considering design as a ‘translation term’ in an exchange between the design/art museum and the ethnographic museum. How and why have material objects been presented and valued differently in these different institutes?

What is the historical, social and technological significance of weaving in human culture? What might the study of woven structures tell us about cognitive abilities, material and ecological knowledge, and social relations involved in practices of making? And how can woven objects in ethnographic collections yield creativity, knowledge and inspiration for contemporary designers?
