Indonesia and South East Asia Studies

The Liefkes Fellowship

The recent merger of the Tropenmuseum, Museum Volkenkunde and Afrika Museum (and the soon to come inclusion of the collections of the Museum Nusantara) has resulted in an impressively  broad and important collection of Indonesian art and material culture – second only to collections in Indonesia. This collection provides both the possibility of studying the broad range of artistic and cultural practices across the Indonesian archipelago and the complex relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands over the long of history of colonization and its afterlife. Fritz Liefkes was a curator of furniture at the Rijksmuseum and a lifelong collector, focusing on Indonesian art and culture.  We invite applications from senior scholars in the field of South East Asian Studies who want to work on innovative research and knowledge dissemination related to the Liefkes collections, and more broadly, the South East Asian collections of the Tropenmuseum and Museum Volkenkunde.
