Charl Landvreugd's project, The production of subjectivity through Bigi Jari, explores the visual record of the Bigi Jari celebrations in the Netherlands to uncover the different subjectivities that are produced by and during the celebration. He is interested in ways that these specific subjectivities of Bigi Jari practitioners are proximate to or distant from their everyday practices of selves. Moreover, he explores how the Bigi Jari celebrations changed over the past 40 years in the Netherlands - the period since Suriname gained its independence in 1975. Bigi Jari is a Surinamese festival that is mainly celebrated by Creole community in Suriname. It is celebrated as a special birthday that mark the special jubilee years for the celebrant.
