Dr. Steven Engelsman Grantees

From 2012 to 2016, the RCMC offered the Dr Steven Engelsman Grant to support (ethnographic) research or publishing on the collections of the Tropenmuseum, Museum Volkenkunde and Afrika Museum. These grants targeted research associates or talented MA students with a background in museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history or related disciplines.

Rosalien van der Poel - Research on the trajectory of Chinese export paintings in Dutch collections
Quinsy Gario - Archival research and public lecture performances on Curaçao and international liberation movements
Charlotte de Jong - Research on Sami material culture in the struggle for indigenous rights in northern Norway
Laura Osorio Iregui - Research on changes in the crafts of indigenous communities in Colombia
Renata Curcio Valente - Comparative research on Brazilian Kadiweu collections of Museum Volkenkunde and Museu do Indio/FUNAI and their collecting processes

2015 Grantees

Vivian Mac Gillavry - Fieldwork in New Zealand to research the perception and feelings of the Maori about ‘ambassadors objects’.
Eva Christiane von Reumont - Research project concerning Javanese Wayang kulit shadow play puppets in the conservation department of the Tropenmuseum.
Yara Maljers and Mara Lin Visser - Fieldwork research to Ghana with the purpose of documenting and collecting garments, interview women and tailors about the ideas they have about fashion and clothing.

2013 Grantees

Helena Moreira Schiel - Comparative research on the Central Brazilian Karaja collections of Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde in Leiden, the Museum der Kulturen in Basel and the Ethnologisches Museum der Staatlichen Museen in Berlin
Christoph Rippe - Research on the early network of anthropologists and fellow travellers whose activities and exchanges provide the larger setting for situating the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde collection historically
Helen Wang - Survey of all coins and banknotes in the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde together with the China department curator to assess conservation requirements, and create chronological/cultural/regional/material-based categories in order to make scholarly reference to the collection more accessible and meaningful
Liza Swaving - Research on the use of visual media in ethnographic museums
Evelien Deelen - Contining work on photographs by textile collector Bodil Christensen. She will digitize the photographs and travel to some of the original villages in Mexico where the they were taken in order to return copies of the photos to people in the villages and share information from the correspondence archives
